About the experience

It’ll be time to call on Nonnatus House, with this special guided walking tour around the filming locations used on Call The Midwife! Adapted from the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, who was herself a midwife, and first aired on BBC One in 2011, this 1950s set drama has attracted millions of viewers, with its weekly episodes combining babies and bicycles in post-WWII Britain, as a team of nurses at the Community of St John the Divine - aka Nonnatus House - attend to the residents of the deprived area of Poplar in the east end of London, which was experiencing the effects of the Baby Boom, delivering over 80 to 100 newborns a month. However, it’s not East London you’ll be heading off to, but instead the historic Chatham Dockyards in Kent, where filming for the series takes place. This 80 acre plot has over 100 original Georgian and Victorian buildings set on cobbled streets that have been well conserved and maintained. Your tour guide will be dressed in character as a Nonnatus midwife, pointing out locations of key scenes from the show as you progress through the tour at a gentle pace. You’ll also get to see locations such as the Commissioner’s House that doubles as a restaurant in the series, and also have a chance to see some genuine props and costumes from the show too - so make sure you have a camera with you for all those photo opportunities! And whilst there’ll be plenty of opportunities to ask questions relating to the show or the pivotal role that Chatham Dockyards once played in the history of the UK, any questions on pregnancy, teething cures or colic are best left to Sister Julienne or Sister Monica Joan!
