Make a Splash, Not a Mistake: Top Tips for Your Watersports Day

With the heatwave in full swing, there’s no better way to cool down and make memories than with a day on the water. Whether you’re diving into something new or revisiting a favourite activity, a bit of planning can turn a good day out into a brilliant one.

Here are seven top tips to help you get the most out of your watersports adventure this summer:

Book ahead

  • The sunshine brings everyone out, and watersports sessions fill up fast. Avoid disappointment by booking in advance - especially if you’ve got your heart set on a specific location or time slot. Early birds also tend to get better prices and more flexibility.

Come prepared

  • Most providers will supply wetsuits, lifejackets, and equipment, but you’ll still want to bring the essentials: swimwear, towels, suncream, water shoes or old trainers, and a change of clothes. Bonus tip - pack a dry bag or bin bag for wet kit at the end of the day.

Stay hydrated

  • You might be surrounded by water, but it’s still easy to get dehydrated in the sun. Bring a refillable water bottle and drink regularly, especially if you’re doing something physically demanding like wakeboarding or coasteering.

Mix and match activities

  • Many locations offer more than one experience - why not make a full day of it? Kayak in the morning, try paddleboarding after lunch, or combine an exciting powerboat ride with a chilled sailing session. It’s a great way to keep everyone in your group engaged.

Go as a group

  • Watersports are more fun when shared. Whether it’s family, friends, or colleagues, doing it together adds to the laughs (and the splashes). Some activities - like rafting or coasteering - are designed for group participation, so bring your crew along.

Check age and skill levels

  • Not all watersports are suitable for every age or ability. Some have minimum age requirements or need a basic level of swimming confidence. Always check ahead so you know what to expect and can pick the right experience for your group.

Arrive early

  • Give yourself enough time to park, get changed, go through the safety briefing, and settle in. Rushing only adds stress, and no one wants to start their day on the back foot. Arriving early also gives you time to ask questions and feel comfortable before hitting the water.
