Take to the skies on the Ultimate Dambusters Tiger Moth Experience, retracing the low-level training routes associated with the legendary 617 Squadron. Departing from Sherburn Aerodrome, this immersive 75 to 90-minute flight combines vintage aviation with fascinating Second World War history. Your experience begins in the authentically styled Dispersal Hut, where you can soak up the atmosphere of 1940s aviation. Stop by the Windsock Bar for a cup of tea, listen to period music on the wireless and get into character before heading out to the aircraft. Your pilot will introduce you to the Tiger Moth, talk you through the aircraft checks and ground procedures, and get you kitted out with a leather flying jacket, goggles and intercom. Then comes one of the great traditions of Tiger Moth flying, hand-starting the propeller. When you hear the call of ‘contact!’, you will know your adventure is about to begin. Once airborne, head west from Sherburn towards the spectacular Derwent Reservoir, following a route packed with historic landmarks. Pass Emley Moor and the former RAF High Flatts navigation station before reaching Penistone and the edge of the Peak District. As you approach the reservoirs, look out for the remains of locations once used for wartime target practice before flying over the magnificent Derwent Dam. This dramatic landscape is closely associated with the training undertaken by Lancaster crews ahead of the famous Dambusters raid. With up to 90 minutes in a classic open-cockpit Tiger Moth, this is an unforgettable opportunity to experience vintage flying while discovering the remarkable aviation history and stories of 617 Squadron and the Dambusters.
