Tank driving near Newcastle offers fun, laughter, mud, and dirt! We provide a taster tank session for small groups. Locations rotate because trundling tanks can impact the ground, but all are within 40 minutes of Newcastle and easy to reach. You will drive a FV432 AFV, an Armoured Fighting Vehicle that's relatively light at about 15 tonnes. Unique to this experience is a pre-drive briefing in another FV432. While one tank operates on terrain, a second is parked for you to explore controls in a static setting. Getting into the driver's hatch is part of the challenge, either wriggling through from the crew compartment or climbing in via the roof. Remember, it's all about levers and brakes - no power assistance here. You'll need strength and control to steer your fully-tracked tank across Northumbrian terrain. Your instructor will act as vehicle commander, overseeing your group. When not driving, you'll sit as a passenger in the FV432's crew compartment. Afterwards, you'll get a tour of the workshop, which houses a diverse collection of military vehicles, including some rarities such as an M2 Bridging Ferry capable of carrying your FV432, the only one of its kind in the North East. Tank driving in Newcastle is a great experience with enthusiastic people who love military gear (especially turbocharged vehicles). They enjoy taking engines out of tanks in their workshop nearly as much as they enjoy taking guests out driving them!

    • Introductory talk, learning about the history of the vehicle and how it works
    • Familiarisation session lasting around 15 minutes, your instructor will explain the use and function of the steering levers and controls
    • Master gentle turns and reversing, and keeping the tank straight on a kilometre of road before tackling the cross-country course
    • Tackle some of the most exciting tank terrain in the UK
    • Approximately 20 minutes of personal drive time
    • When not driving, you'll experience the ride of a soldier in the crew compartment
    • Opportunity to tour the centre's vehicle collection, which includes a Saracen 6x6 APC, M2 Bridging Ferry, Stalwart and Chieftain Main Battle Tank (housed at a separate location)
    • A guided tour of the military vehicles
    • Allow approximately one and a half hours on site for this experience
    • You will form part of a small group of 3 participants
    • Experiences require a minimum of 2 participants to take place
    • If the minimum numbers are not being reached, your date will be rescheduled
    • Spectators are welcome to join the introductory talk, ride as a passenger and view the centre's vehicle collection for an additional charge of £25 per person (£15 for ages 8-15)
    • Minimum age 15
    • Under-18s must be accompanied by a participating or spectating adult
    • Good upper body strength is required to operate the (non-power-assisted) steering levers
    • Participants with a chest size larger than 56" may have difficulty accessing these vehicles
    • Not suitable if you have back, neck or heart problems or during pregnancy
    • This experience usually takes place once a month on a weekend date throughout the year
    • Weekdays may be requested
