Product ID: 17420

This exclusive experience offers a rare opportunity to visit the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar and climb into the cockpit of a genuine Spitfire fighter aircraft — something only available through us in the UK. Set at one of Britain’s most famous former RAF airfields, this unforgettable visit is a must for aviation enthusiasts of all ages and a fantastic opportunity for memorable photographs. Since 2011, the Heritage Hangar at Biggin Hill Airport has been home to several airworthy Spitfires and other iconic vintage warbirds. During your visit, youwill get up close to these historic aircraft and enjoy privileged access behind the scenes of the working hangar. You will also be able to view ongoing restoration work without the usual flight-line barriers. Feel free to take photos, ask questions and chat with the skilled technicians — whether you are curious about the Spitfire’s distinctive elliptical wings or the legendary Merlin engines. The highlight comes when you step into the cockpit of the Spitfire itself, usually the Mk IX Supermarine Spirit of Kent (TA805). Famous across the skies of Kent and beyond, this iconic aircraft offers an unforgettable moment as you experience what it’s truly like to sit in the pilot’s seat of one of Britain’s most legendary fighters.

Sitting in the Spitfire was an interesting experience but the organisation around it could be improved. Clear directions to the Heritage Hanger would be a good start. More important though would be some sort of entry timing system that would reduce the waiting time created by several tens of people arriving at the same time and then having to join a potentially long queue for that experience.

It was an amazing experience to be able to be so Up close and personal , with the Spitfires. I liked the informal approach, where you could wander around and look closely at three of the Spits. Obviously we understood why works in progress were cordoned off. The queuing to sit in the plane was well worth it for the thrill of being in the cockpit. The guide was really well informed, gave lots of info and answered my many questions. The only improvement I could suggest would be a short intro, to briefly explain the evolution of the Spitfire, though I suspect many people there were already quite well informed. Seeing a Spit take off a Hurricane land, was the icing on the cake This experience was a birthday present from my son, who also sat in a Spitfire. A superb gift and an unforgettable experience. Thank you Into The Blue.

Went with my husband and both enjoyed the experience of being up close and sitting in a Spitfire and also having the chance of speaking with a veteran Spitfire pilot who flew during the second World War. It was very informal which was nice, though I think it could be improved with a few tweaks to make it even better bit more seating generally, a time limit on sitting in the planes, as some took far too long and made others wait in line for 30 minutes at a time, veteran pilot a bit more central as he was hidden by the queues of people. Overall people on site were very informative and friendly and appreciate they volunteer for the occasion.

This is an experience for enthusiasts. As such, the opportunity to get up close and personal with spitfires and a hurricane are priceless and a great privilege. To sit in one and have a play with the joystick and pedals is unique and unforgettable. However, the organisation should have been a bit better. We were issued with a ticket for the cockpit experience, and as 50 other enthusiasts were present on the same day, a queue quickly formed for the two available spitfires. There was a lot to be seen in the hanger, with several other spitfires in varying stages of reconstruction, artefacts from the war, apart from the golden opportunity to see in detail how the planes were put together and be able to touch, smell and see in close up when usually they are kept at least 20 ft from any close inspection. It is therefore unfortunate that quite some time was spent patiently waiting in line for my turn to sit in a spit. Simple solution, number the tickets and call out the numbers when a cockpit became vacant. We were left alone the whole time to wander around and look at everything on show at leisure. This aspect was very good. Maybe a lesser enthusiast with loads of questions to ask would have been left wanting some kind of commentary.Overall for me, it was an exceptional experience which I am extremely glad I was a part of.

Really great day out. Interesting, knowledgeable people. No rush to the day so had plenty of times to chat to the volunteers.

Reviewed by: Claire Hatherall

Overall I was impressed but disappointed that when I actually sat in the spit a man behind me in the queue stood on the box beside the plane and monopolized the volunteers time so that I was unable to ask questions relating to the interior of the plane. Unfortunate but this really detracted from the whole experience.

The guy who spoke to me when in the Spitfire was so knowledgable and interesting that I was glad to be able to speak to him later, when he was on his break. A few more explanatory display boards around the hangar would have also helped and it would have been great to have been able to look closer at the Hurricane, Harvard and Lotus Cortina. Finally, the directions given appeared to confuse a lot of people. However, with all that it would have deserved 6 stars

A very interesting day and the sit in a Spit was great, however it would be a lot more interesting if a presentation was given about the aircraft in the hanger. Also the coffee ran out during the event and the car park was poorly signed. The little chat we had with Rodney Scrase DFC was a pleasure and his book is well worth reading my mothers cousin shared the same battlefields during the Africa campaign but as a Royal Engineer1st Army clasp.Overall a good day but could be a great day with a few small tweaks

I bought this for my husband for xmas, the sit in the spit was amazing he said and was very happy also to have time with an engineer who explained everything. He did comment that there could have been more of a speachpresentation at the beginning to cover the general topics that everyone asks. It was nice that the engineers took time with everyone who sat in the spit, and didnt rush them , but there were a couple who were sat in the plane far longer than anyone else, and as we had to queue it was a long wait and not really fair, the time should be limited to say 20mins each and anyone wanting to spend longer return after eveyone else had their turn. We werent sure we parked in the correct car park as there were no signs, and it wasnt clear where the hanger was. Real bonus to speak to an authentic pilot.
