That means driving the locomotive, firing the boiler and taking your turn as guard. And this isn’t just shuffling up and down a siding either - you’ll clock up a solid 16 miles in each role, hauling a rake of coaches like a proper heritage service. Expect teamwork, a bit of grit, and moments where you realise just how much skill goes into keeping one of these magnificent machines moving. Then, when you’re not busy keeping the firebox roaring or the wheels turning, you can soak it all in from the guard’s van - whistle included, naturally. You’ll also be treated to a two-course hot lunch and a behind-the-scenes shed and yard tour at Wirksworth. It’s here you’ll see the real magic: the restoration, the maintenance, and the sheer dedication required to keep these historic engines alive. It’s a full day. A proper day. And by the end of it, you won’t just have driven a steam train - you’ll have earned it.
