About the experience

Product ID: 12614

Experience the art of blacksmithing in Essex! You can find this smithy on a farm estate in Maldon, where expert Tom oversees the metal-bending magic. Tom has been working with steel and wrought iron for many years, making him the perfect teacher for budding blacksmiths. We offer tasters and full-day blacksmithing courses in Essex, which include a maximum of two participants for maximum hands-on time and individual attention from your host. The aim is for you to learn basic blacksmithing skills and make a couple of items to take home. A working smithy like this one in Essex is always bustling with activity. In addition to preparing the raw materials (metal) and tools, you'll need to tend the fire to ensure it's kept stoked and ready to heat the metal to red-hot. When your length of metal is bright red and glowing, it's time to try out one of the most crucial blacksmithing processes - drawing. This involves making your hot metal longer and thinner by working and pinching it while it's hot. You'll hit the hot part of the metal with your hammer, and the malleable metal stretches and flattens. After a few hours of shaping, bending, pinching, and upsetting (the opposite of drawing) the metal, you'll have hopefully created your very own forged metal piece.

I loved my hot and sweaty experience. The size of the group 3 was just right for all of us to gain a bit of blasksmithing. A great way to sample this ancient art. Thanks to all involved

An excellent morning which I thoroughly enjoyed. As a recently retired DT teacher it was good to practice some of the skills I had previously taught. It was also good to take away a product that I was proud of making.
