Here's a creative workshop with a difference to try out where you will - quite literally - have an axe to grind! On this intensive one day axe maxing course, at Middle Row Forge in Cumbria, you'll have the unique opportunity to make your very own axe, all under the guidance of Richard, your expert and skilled blacksmith. The rural forge is set within the heart of Cumbria, situated between the North Pennines and Kielder Forest Park, and is just a short drive away from Carlisle. You'll be forging a Tomahawk style axe, made of carbon steel with a wooden handle, similar to the ones used in camping, bushcraft and backpacking - so it is both functional as well as expertly crafted. And you'll also get to take home the axe you've made as well, plus, there'll be such satisfaction that comes from having a working tool that is of far superior quality and durability to what you'd find in the shops. On this one day course, you'll learn all the key hand-forging techniques, from heat treating and grinding the blade, to fixing the handle on. Class numbers are kept small at around four people, and all the raw materials and protective gear and equipment are provided. So just come prepared to learn and put in a bit of elbow grease under the enthusiastic tutelage of Richard!

What's Included

  • Design and create your own unique small axe suitable for bushcraft, camping and backpacking
  • Work with punch tools and learn Smith and Striker techniques
  • Learn how to harden and temper the blade of your axe, to make a strong and durable tool
  • Refreshments are included
  • A break for lunch (lunch not provided)
  • You will take home your finished axe, made yourself using traditional techniques
  • Please allow 8 hours for this experience
  • Days generally start at 09:30am and finish around 17:30pm
  • You will form part of a small group of up to 4 participants

    • Experiences generally operate on selected Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year
    • Occasional Saturday dates may be available upon request
    • Dates are subject to availability
    • Minimum age 18
    • This is an intense day and a good, general level of fitness is required
    • Some experience of working with tools is recommended
    • If you have any health or mobility conditions that may impede your ability to participate please advise this at the time of booking
    • Not suitable for spectators
    • Experiences generally operate with a minimum of 2-3 participants. In the unlikely event minimum numbers are not reached your date may be re-scheduled
    • Minimum Age: 18 years
    • Participants should wear old, sensible clothing (non synthetic), long trousers and sturdy leather boots or shoes
    • The forge can be cold so wearing layers is ideal
    • Long hair must be tied back
    • Safety glasses (provided) must be worn at all times inside the workshop
