About the Experience

Set off from Edinburgh for a full day exploring the medieval Kingdom of Northumbria, a place where dramatic coastline, ancient stories and brilliantly odd history all seem to collide. You will travel in a comfortable air conditioned coach with a guide who keeps the journey lively with tales of monks, battles and the occasional royal mishap. The route follows a circular path through the north east, so you can simply sit back and enjoy the changing scenery as you go. Your first stop is Holy Island, a peaceful tidal haven that was once one of the most important religious sites in Britain. Here you can wander up to Lindisfarne Castle or explore the priory where the famous Lindisfarne Gospels were created. After that it is on to Alnwick, home to the grand castle often called the Windsor of the North. Film fans will recognise it immediately from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and the grounds are just as impressive in real life. In the afternoon the tour rolls towards the River Tweed and crosses at Coldstream. If time allows you will pause at Flodden Field, one of the best preserved battlefields in Europe. It is a calm place now, yet your guide will bring to life the huge clash that once unfolded there. With the sights and stories of Northumbria still fresh, you will return to Edinburgh in the early evening. This Northumbria and Holy Island coach tour is a brilliant day out for anyone who loves history, scenery or simply being swept along somewhere interesting. It also makes a great gift for friends or family who fancy a break from the usual city routine. Keep in mind that entry fees for attractions are not included, so it is worth planning ahead if you want to explore inside.
