Your trip will be led by British Canoe Union (BCU) qualified instructors, passionate about kayaking, the outdoors, and the local wildlife. They’ll guide you safely while sharing their knowledge of the environment. The rivers of Sussex offer a variety of stunning settings — from gently meandering waterways to ever-changing tidal flows — each with its own unique scenery to admire as you paddle along. Outings last upwards of five hours, and at the end, you can enjoy a warming hot drink by the river, reflecting on the sights you’ve seen and your paddling achievements. No need to choose your specific river adventure when purchasing the voucher — you can decide which trip to take when booking your Sussex kayaking experience.

    • Choose one of four stunning river locations to kayak on
    • Full safety briefing and instruction on how to use the kayaking equipment
    • Learn basic kayaking techniques
    • British canoeing permits from the Environmental Agency are included in this trip
    • At the end of your paddle, you will be treated to a hot drink (tea, coffee, or hot squash). The perfect way to warm up, recharge, and relive the highlights of your adventure after a rewarding journey on the river
    • You will form part of a group of between 4 - 8 people
    • River choice can be selected when booking a date

    River Choices:

    River Arun (Upper)

    • Begin your adventure at the tranquil Pallingham Quay, where calm waters wind through open farmland and wilder, tree-lined stretches of the upper Arun

    River Ouse (Upper)

    • Start at the peaceful Barcombe Mills, paddling along narrow waterways and over the gentle remains of the old mill — a perfect setting for a relaxed exploration.

    River Ouse (Middle)

    • Launch from Barcombe Mills and journey downstream to Lewes, finishing at the iconic Harvey’s Brewery. Unwind after your paddle with a meal, a local brew, and time to reflect on your trip.

    River Cuckmere

    • Opt for Cuckmere Haven and enjoy a scenic tidal paddle through the South Downs National Park. Keep an eye out for the famous White Horse of Litlington, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot an otter or mink along the way.
    • Not suitable for spectators

    Equipment needed:

    • Full change of clothes to go kayaking in, including footwear and underwear
    • Clothing should be suitable for the time of year
    • Waterproof jacket and trousers (to wear on the water)
    • Extra jumper
    • Warm hat/sun hat
    • Gloves
    • Towel
    • Snacks/water
    • Medication / Tablets / Inhaler etc

    The above list is just a guide, and appropriate clothing for the time of year should be worn. We highly recommend you have a dry bag for all your kit on the water and to put your wet clothing in at the end of the day.

    • The trip will be adapted to suit all skill levels, whether you're a beginner or have prior experience
    • There are no requirements for this experience, but being able to swim 50m and having a reasonable level of fitness is preferable
    • Available on selected dates between March - October
    • All dates and times are subject to availability
    • This trip is only possible at certain times due to the tide
