Gliding in Lincolnshire is an unforgettable experience, and a winch launch flight offers an exciting introduction to engine-free flying. Taking off from Saltby Airfield near Grantham, you will be launched skywards by a powerful winch cable in a rapid burst of speed. Accelerating from 0–60 mph in just a few seconds, the launch is fast, thrilling and full of adrenaline. Once released, the flight becomes calm and peaceful as you glide above the patchwork countryside of Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, soaking up the views below. With an experienced instructor on board to guide you through the basics of gliding, this winch launch flight combines excitement with stunning scenery. The club operates seven days a week, weather permitting, and is easily accessible from major roads across the East Midlands.

Everyone was very welcoming. The flight was great and I was given the chance to take the controls of the glider myself when we were up, although I wasnt great at flying in a straight line It was all well organised at Buckminster Gliding Club and I would thoroughly recommend it. Best to use a voucher in the summer months though when there is a better chance of thermals and a longer flight. They did very kindly give me a second flight but that was at their discretion and not part of the deal.

    Introductory Glider Flights (Winch Launch)

    • Two glider flights, launched by a high-speed winch
    • 10-15 minutes of flying time, depending on conditions

    • Although specific launch or flying types can be requested, the flight and aircraft type will be chosen by the instructor on the day, taking weather conditions and other factors into account
    • Spectators are welcome to watch the lesson from the clubhouse
    • No minimum age limits
    • Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult on the airfield
    • Weight restrictions: minimum 6.5 stone (40kg), maximum 16 stone (100kg)
    • Height restrictions: minimum 5ft (152cms) maximum 6ft 5ins (195cms)
    • Weekdays and weekends throughout the year

After some rainy days we finally made it up on a cold January day for a fantastic gliding experience at the Grantham Airfield..and there were thermals We both had a go and the birthday boy stayed up for nearly an hour with his tutor and I, as a passenger, broke the January record at over an hour
