The club operates an impressive fleet of gliders and tug aircraft, so whichever option you pick, you will be in expert hands. Go for the motor glider if you would like to power yourself into the sky before switching off and soaring. Prefer tradition? An aerotow will see you smoothly towed aloft before releasing into peaceful, engine-free flight. Rufforth itself – a former WW2 RAF base – adds real character to the experience, with two tarmac runways and grass launch areas providing plenty of space to get airborne. Positioned just 20 miles east of the Pennines, the site is perfectly placed to benefit from the famous Pennine wave and reliable thermals, making it a fantastic spot for soaring. After climbing to around 2,000ft, you will release from the tow – or cut the engine – and experience the unforgettable sensation of silent flight, staying aloft on nothing but rising air.
