About the Experience

Outdoor Experience Days: Escape to the wilds of South Wales and take on river and mountain in one epic full-day gorge walking adventure for two in Merthyr Tydfil. Set within the dramatic landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park, this seven-hour experience is packed with adrenaline, challenge and unforgettable scenery.

Often known as “ghyll scrambling”, gorge walking is a hands-on, high-energy way to explore the natural formations carved by centuries of river erosion. After meeting your experienced instructors, you will be kitted out in wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids before heading into the gorge. From there, it’s all about getting stuck in — wading through rushing streams, scrambling over rocks, climbing natural features and sliding along smooth limestone shaped by the river’s flow.

You may even venture through atmospheric tunnels and tackle waterfall jumps if you are feeling brave. With a break for lunch before heading back out for more action in the afternoon, this is a full-on day of climbing, scrambling and splashing your way through the Welsh countryside.

Challenging, exhilarating and seriously fun, this is the ultimate outdoor adventure for those ready to test themselves against nature.

  • Minimum Age: 8 years.

    This is a very physical experience, so participants should be fit and healthy.

  • Sturdy footwear with a strong sole is essential.

    You will need to bring a swimsuit/trunks to wear under the wetsuit, and a spare set of clothes to change into afterwards. Please bring your own towels.

    Safety equipment such as helmets, wetsuits and buoyancy aids will be provided by the centre upon arrival.

    Please ensure you bring lunch and drinks along with you, as these will not be provided by the centre.

  • This full day gorge walking experience in Merthyr Tydfil is available throughout the year on both weekdays and weekends.

    Please note that bookings in May, June and July can be tricky due to higher numbers of large group bookings, so please give plenty of notice.

    If you have purchased a voucher for 3 people or fewer, you will be added to another group booking on a suitable date.

    There is no maximum group size as such, but groups larger than 12 participants will need to give plenty of notice for booking.

    This is a full-day experience, taking you out into the hills, so it is not suitable for non-participating spectators.
