About the experience

Product ID: 16049

Great things often come in small packages, and these Cumbernauld Airport flying lessons are no exception! This compact yet highly professional airport is only 20 minutes from Glasgow and 30 minutes from Edinburgh, providing a fantastic setting to try flying a light aircraft for the first time. Originally a grass strip when it opened in 1966, Cumbernauld Airport expanded in 1988 with a new 820m x 23m asphalt runway and a fully equipped terminal, transforming it into a modern airport suitable for flying lessons, hangarage, aircraft maintenance, and charter services. When you arrive, you'll head to the main terminal, home to this flying centre. Your experience begins with meeting your instructor pilot, who will accompany you on your lesson. After a safety briefing and aircraft familiarisation, you'll be ready to board. Once cleared by air traffic control, you'll taxi down the runway, take off, and start your flight over Glasgow- marking the beginning of your Cumbernauld Airport flying lesson! Lessons are conducted in a four-seater Piper for 45 minutes. Your instructor handles take-offs and landings, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the bird's-eye view of the Scottish countryside. During level flight, you're encouraged to take the controls and fly the plane yourself. If you pursue further lessons here, that initial trial can count towards your Private Pilot's Licence (ppl). Choosing Cumbernauld Airport for flying lessons offers a key advantage: you benefit from all the facilities of a larger airport, but with unrestricted airspace. This means no unnecessary delays, and you can make the most of the open flight paths around you. The airport also has a café and restaurant operated by the flying school, allowing friends and family to watch the action while relaxing comfortably in the heart of Cumbernauld Airport.

I was given a flying lesson as a present. It was something I always wanted to do. It was an amazing experience. The instructor was very happy to answer all my questions and give some information about continuing lessons to get a piolts licence. The view was an experience in itself. I would recommend the experience to anyone.

Simply the best experience of my life Of my 45 minute flight I flew yes I flew for 40 minutes how good is that Never imagined for one moment I would get control for such a long period and Dave my pilot just let me get on with it. I cannot thank the people at Cumbernauld enough the trip of a lifetime and the bucket list well and truly ticked. I will just have to win the lottery now and learn how to fly

This flying lesson was a gift was for my father, a 72 year old action man. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was money well spent. He said that the scenery was incredible and enjoyed being in the cockpit, quizzing the pilot.

The aeroplane was smaller than I had thought it would be. Quite cramped and strong smell of aviation fuel. An interesting experience and the pilot was very informative about all the places we could see. Luckilyy, it was a clear day so visibility was good.

My experience was a 20 minute flying experience from Cumbernauld airport. My instructor John introduced himself him a kind and responsive manner. He showed me out to the airfield and showed me the aircraft we would be flying. It was a Cessna 152 the plane its self looked old however it still purred like a cat and at no point did I not feel safe. After take off I realised that the radiointercom system was very poor and I couldnt hear a word what John was saying to me. After a few hand signals he gave me full control of the Cessna. I have had some flight simulator experience so I pretty much knew what I was doing. After 20 minutes of flying he directed me back to the airfield and allowed me to descend when we got to around 100ft John took over the controls. The weather was a mild day with low winds and the aircraft was a little shakey therefor I can understand if flights are cancelled due to weather, this would have been an awful experience if it was really windy. The full experience was great from start to finish only thing that was annoying was the radio system. I felt like I was annoying asking him to repeat everything and still not being able to hear. I would highly recommend. If the company had to upgrade there radiointercom I cant see why anyone would have a bad experience.

Having flown a small plane before at Scone airfield,I looked forward to repeating tbe experience at Cumbernauld.Booking was easy and then very stormy weather on the Mon in November 2024 led to flying being postponed.A quick word with Alan and it was re arranged for the Wednesday morning.Having already flown i took on board the advice and prepared to fly again.we took off and climbed to 2000 feet.I took over control when prompted and the instructor Scott taught me to climb and tight turn using the controls. It was totally exhillrating and i was very proud of myself.I am 77yrs old and i have today booked another 3 flights.I have only the highest praise for the guys at Cumbernauld for making the outing so GOOD Many Thanks Jack.
