The line runs for nine miles between Wirksworth and Duffield, winding through proper Derbyshire countryside alongside the River Ecclesbourne. It’s the longest heritage railway in the county, and there’s plenty to see along the way. Top tip: don’t rush through Wirksworth. There’s loads to enjoy, from the quirky audio surprise in the old quarry tunnel to a browse in the bookshop. And yes, the Apollo café in that 1950s wagon on platform 3 does a very respectable ice cream. If trains are running up to Ravenstor on your visit, get yourself on that branch line. It heads off in the opposite direction and drops you right by the National Stone Centre, where kids can have a go at panning for fool’s gold. Hop off at Duffield and you’ll catch a glimpse of the modern railway too, with mainline trains heading off to places like Derby, Matlock, Sheffield and London St Pancras.
