At the heritage Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway in Wales, you will be on a shared session with one other participant, as an expert driver guides you through how to control this famed workhorse that was colloquially known as 'the Tractor' because of its distinctive engine noise, and which could be commonly seen on UK rail networks between 1964 and 2007. Your driving session will be 8 miles down the line from the main station at Furnace Sidings to Coed Avon and back, and then again from Furnace Sidings down to Whistle Inn Halt. It'd make for the perfect surprise for someone who really loves their classic diesel trains!

    Class 37 Locomotive

    • Fleet Number: D6916 (37216)
    • Built in 1964
    • Old clothing that fully covers the arms and legs should be worn
    • Wear sturdy shoes or boots that protect the feet - trainers are not permitted
    • Please note that once your booking is confirmed, the provider's terms and conditions will apply. In the event of postponements due to weather and/or operational issues, your booking will be rescheduled
    • Generally, the Class 37 loco is used for this experience. Occasionally, a class 31 may be used (Fleet Number: 'D5627' 31203, Built in 1960)

    • Participants should be reasonably fit and in good health - fit enough to climb on and off the locomotive from ground level unaided
    • Selected weekday and weekend dates throughout the year from September 2026
