Chinnor Railway train driving experiences offer you the chance to operate a Type 4 diesel locomotive along the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway in Oxfordshire as part of these shared experiences. We provide vouchers for a 60-minute session with two participants. During this experience, you'll be on the footplate of the classic Type 4 diesel for a round trip along the entire Chinnor Railway line. These diesel locos are truly impressive. With around 2500 bhp, the powerful Type 4 has been heard across the country’s railway network, operating passenger and freight services since the early 1960s. Today, some of the original Brush-built locomotives still run on the mainline with certificates of rail-worthiness, though most have been retired. The Type 4 you’ll drive has been carefully restored and now proudly operates at Chinnor Railway. Your Chinnor crew will greet you in the locomotive's cab. After a quick familiarisation, you’ll hear the signal clunk and then you’re off, cruising in your Type 4 along the eight-mile line from Chinnor to Princes Risborough and back. Enjoy stunning scenery from your elevated viewpoint in the locomotive, and have a blast driving this mighty diesel train.     • Wear sturdy shoes or boots that protect the feet - trainers are not permitted
    • Minimum age 18
    • Participants should be reasonably fit and in good health, fit enough to climb on and off the locomotive from ground level unaided
    • Selected weekday and weekend dates throughout the year
    • There will generally be 4 dates per month
    • Due to the popularity of this experience, please book well in advance to avoid disappointment

I enjoyed the experience, it was a casual relaxing way to spend a morning and you never know when you will need to be able to drive a diesel train in an emergency like in disaster movies

Driving the diesel locomotive was an amazing experience. Being able to take control and seeing the track roll out ahead of you was initially terrifying but with the support and encouragement of the guys giving instructions it was exhilarating. I loved it
