What Aircraft Can People with a Disability Fly?
On your Accessible Flying Lesson, you'll be taking to the skies in the Ikarus C42 — one of the most popular and versatile light training aircraft in the world. This high-wing, two-seater plane is designed for stability, comfort, and ease of handling, making it ideal for both first-time flyers and budding pilots.
Powered by a reliable Rotax engine, the Ikarus is fuel-efficient, relatively quiet, and built with a strong yet lightweight frame. Its gull-wing doors make access straightforward, while the cabin offers excellent visibility so you can enjoy every moment of your flight. The aircraft is equipped with dual controls, meaning your instructor is always there to guide you, but you'll also have the chance to take the controls yourself.
Both 30-minute and 60-minute lessons at Little Gransden Airfield (Cambridgeshire) and Rochester Airport (Kent) use the Ikarus C42. It's also the aircraft for the 1-Hour Castles Accessible Flight Experience at Rochester, where you can enjoy stunning views of Kent's ancient castles, the Thames Estuary, and historic naval dockyards.
All experiences are Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved, with fully qualified instructors who have extensive experience supporting people with a wide range of disabilities, mobility challenges, learning difficulties, and sensory impairments. Their goal is simple: to make the joy of flying accessible to everyone.
Where Can People with a Disability Learn to Fly?
Accessible flying lessons are currently available at two friendly and welcoming locations in the UK:
Little Gransden Airfield, Cambridgeshire – A charming countryside airfield surrounded by open landscapes, making it the perfect spot for a smooth and scenic introduction to flying. The relaxed setting offers stunning views of rural Cambridgeshire as you take to the skies.
Rochester Airport, Kent – One of the South East's best-known airfields, steeped in aviation history and offering easy access from London and the surrounding areas. Flying from here gives you a chance to enjoy incredible views across Kent's rolling countryside and beyond.
Both airfields provide a warm and supportive environment where accessibility and enjoyment are top priorities.
