About the experience

This One Day Blacksmith course for two will give you both a chance to flex your metalworking skills. Hosted by award winning blacksmith Michael Hart from his forge in the heart of the Kent countryside, near the village of Horsmonden. Michael’s workshop here is fully kitted out, and he specialises in using a combination of traditional and modern techniques to create classic and modern pieces - everything from the iron gates outside the Houses of Parliament to contemporary barn conversions. But as well as his design and commission work, he also teaches blacksmithing courses on a regular basis, which are run in small groups of four to ensure you both get the most out of the day. Teaching is very practical and so you’ll both need to be physically fit to keep up with the rigorous work. You’ll also be supplied with a set of blacksmithing tools, including the forge, anvil, vice and hand tools. And once you get started with crafting the molten metal, you’ll be amazed at what you create. You’ll create a variety of pieces throughout the course including a hook and a fire poker. After you’ve come up with a design together with Michael, you’ll have his expertise on hand and plenty of demonstrations and assistance to help you get the hang of things. This great crafting day out for two will see you take away a new set of skills and also three beautiful pieces to take home with you as a lasting memento.

An excellent day. There was much more than I expected and the skills of Michael were astounding. He is a great teacher and very patient. Also made a great lunch which was totally unexpected. I have tried to upload a photo but it is not allowing it.

This experience was amazing - Mike (the instructor) was fabulous, really talented and very patient - helped you out however much you needed. I was lucky and got to experience using both the traditional coal forge and the gas forge. What was great (and in my opinion better than some other experiences) is that everything you made you got to take away at the end of the day with you. Definitely worth doing if you have any interest - it really was a full day and great fun! (Just FYI, in case you’re concerned - I’m a small-ish woman and could do absolutely everything, no problem at all!) Thanks Mike for a fab day and all I absolutely love everything I made!

Had the most fantastic day as a trainee blacksmith. Four of us on the experience, myself the only lady with probably the least experience of using a hammer but was made very welcome and never felt patronized. By the end of a very tiring but most enjoyable day I came home with a coat hook I was proud of, a very serviceable poker and an interesting leaf key fob. Would well.recommend.

Had a fantastic time doing this blacksmith day. Really great experience with spot on tuition and guidance. Made a number of items all of which you get to take home. Would thoroughly recommended for anyone looking for an experience day thats not the same as everything else.
Alan
Fantastic experience day. Since I was very young I had alway wanted to have a go at blacksmithing and for once my wife listened to my general ramblings and brought me this experience. Michael was welcoming and explained all the steps in detail, he was knowledgeable and answered any questions from the group in way we could all understand. He was patient and made sure the four of us were enjoying the day throughout. I would highly recommend this experience day.
