Introduction to Blacksmithing - Edinburgh
About the experience
Are you fascinated by the idea of working with steel and transforming it into something beautiful and practical? Do you want to learn traditional blacksmithing techniques? If so, join Sandy at his forge in Edinburgh and learn how to create working tools and decorative pieces using raw steel. Sandy, a former corporate worker, left the corporate world to pursue his passion for blacksmithing. His workshop, located in the Newbridge area of Edinburgh, is where he turns steel into beautiful and functional objects, from small bottle tops to contemporary outdoor furniture pieces. During this four-hour course, you will learn traditional techniques of forging and fabricating steel. With a maximum of three pupils in the forge, you will have plenty of hands-on time to develop your forging skills. It's a physically demanding art, so you'll need to be fairly fit to hammer away at the hot metal! You will start by making a small item like a metal hook or bottle opener and then move on to forge something more ambitious, like a fire poker. And the best part? You get to take both pieces home with you! Sandy's forge is traditional, with no modern machinery involved. You'll learn traditional techniques like upsetting, drawing, tapering, bending, and punching, using force and heat to manipulate the steel into beautiful and practical objects. If you're intrigued by the idea of blacksmithing, book this course and join Sandy at his forge in Edinburgh. You'll explore the art of blacksmithing and leave with a newfound appreciation for this traditional craft.
