An Overview of the Sport of Axe Throwing
03 October 2024
Axe throwing is taking the UK by storm, and is one of its fastest growing sports (although we're pretty sure it will never overtake football in popularity!)
Given Axe Throwing's meteoric rise, we feel duty bound to take a closer look at the fun activity, including what to expect in your first session, advice for beginners, and how to get involved.
A Brief History
While loggers and lumberjacks have been around for some 200 years, it was only by the mid-twentieth century in America that competitions started with woodsmen competing against each other.
The sport of axe throwing really gathered pace in Europe early this century, with some of the first commercial axe throwing venues opening almost 10 years ago.
Chop and Load
One of the great things about axe throwing is that you don't need any previous experience, and all skill levels are welcome.
Of course, safety is paramount so the session will start with an introduction and safety briefing, but it won't be long before you get to grips with the axe, which could be a Tomahawk or traditional style.
Even before the day starts, you could consider adding to the package by combining it with a similar activity including axe forging, or other target practice such as archery, clay pigeon shooting and air rifles – by the time the day's finished you'll be a crack shot! Get a Grip
Obviously, the aim of axe throwing is to get the axe as close to the centre of the target as possible and while that might seem daunting, axe throwing is easier than you might think.
Firstly, always listen to and obey all safety instructions. Next step is to select an axe that you're happy with, relax and get comfortable throwing the axe.
If you're too tense then you'll get frustrated, while throwing as hard as you can will often end in failure. Once again, pay full attention to the instructor as they advise the best technique for consistent accuracy.
Cut Above the Rest
At Experiences UK, we offer a number of axe throwing packages, and other axe and target practice related experiences at nationwide venues.
There's also the option to learn more about axes with axe making courses where you can make a hand forged axe, whilst those with an eye for the target can also take their pick from more modern devices including rifle shooting.
These fantastic experiences can be booked for a friend or loved-one, or why not treat yourself? If you don't fancy doing it on your own, then make it a group affair and whoever is best at axe throwing can take home the bragging rights.
